Why you need natural soap

When I was a little girl, I suffered every winter from cracked, bleeding hands. As I got older, my skin problems progressed to multiple chemical sensitivities and eczema requiring prescriptions that didn’t really make it go away. Nothing seemed to help. So I was skeptical when a friend insisted I try ‘real’ soap. The results, though, were astonishing! Within a few weeks, my skin completely cleared and I was able to throw away all my prescriptions, ointments, creams, and lotions. I was hooked! I have been making soap and helping others like me ever since! Now all I need to keep my skin problems away is ‘real’ soap, made the natural way.

Natural Soap vs. Commercial Soaps

Natural soap – real soap – is made the old fashioned way (via a process called saponification) from lye and natural, edible oils like coconut, olive, castor, and palm.

A natural byproduct of saponification is vegetable glycerin, which is a natural humectant, meaning it draws moisture to the skin. Lotions and skin products use vegetable glycerin to hydrate and moisturize the skin. Natural soap naturally contains vegetable glycerin.

Most soaps sold in stores aren’t natural, in fact they are made of harsh, commercial detergents. Just read the long list of ingredients and you’ll see that these ‘soaps’ are anything but natural.

Even liquid soaps, which are so convenient to use, I’ve found to be the harshest on the skin, with anti-bacterial soap topping them all. When I wash my hands regularly with antibacterial liquid soap, they start to bleed again…every time! Commercial detergents are hard on the skin. They strip away the natural protective layers of oil from the skin surface leaving the skin dry and unprotected.

Natural Ingredients, Plants, and Herbs

I start my soaps with a foundation of natural, food grade oils that help produce a moisturizing, creamy, smooth, rich lather. It is very mild and nourishing for sensitive, aging, or baby skin. It also attracts external moisture to the skin, keeping it soft and supple.

As good as natural soap is, there is more that nature has provided to help our bodies. So, I add apples, blueberries, avocados, almonds, or pumpkin – natural ingredients with various properties to support your skin. Aloe vera, comfrey, marshmallow root, plantain: plants and herbs aid wound repair, hydrate and rejuvenate the skin, and reduce inflammation. Add to that raw honey and essential oils chosen for their support of the skin. I try my best to give your skin the best nourishment I can through soaps. Take a look at my soap descriptions to learn more about the beneficial ingredients I add to my soaps and how they can help you.
